Several themes emerged at last month’s 1EdTech Members’ Assembly in Charleston, SC. This summit, a reboot of previous gatherings, fostered dialogue and sought to shape the course for 1EdTech and its members in the coming year. The sessions were not just “sit & get” presentations but included problem statements, challenges, and updates on member work, inviting reviews, questions, and direction-setting. These topics were directly relevant to the work Compro is doing for several of its clients:
Several sessions discussed the CASE standards. One explored their use in supporting extended student records beyond transcripts, highlighting how the CASE rubric standard can integrate with other standards to create more comprehensive records, especially when combined with Open Badges and Complete Learner Records (see more below). Another reviewed CASE’s impact in US K12 education, its growing international presence, and how 1EdTech might support broader global adoption.
How do Open Badges, the CASE standard, and a Comprehensive Learner Record reveal the true story of student experience? A lively group discussed this, emphasizing badging and credentialing. Topics included who issues credentials, how they are reported, and the appropriate level of credentialing. Compro is especially interested in these issues as we develop a new learning management system for alternative high schools and competency-based education, where transcripts often provide an incomplete student narrative.
As expected, much of the discussion focused on AI, particularly the role of Model Context Protocol (MCP) in education AI applications. Several companies demonstrated how MCP can provide insights into student performance and enhance content. However, questions remain about privacy and IP protection with LLMs, and whether smaller, specialized AI models might be more suitable than large language models for these tasks. Expect 1EdTech to continue honing this topic going forward.
We appreciate the work 1EdTech and its members do in brainstorming, defining, developing, and managing standards, as this streamlines and simplifies a very complex education ecosystem. We look forward to contributing to this work ourselves in 2026 and beyond.
